OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, recently announced the launch of a new feature called GPT at the company's developer day. This comes after a period of leadership turmoil and chaos at OpenAI. Prior to the release of GPT, the ChatGPT with web browsing capability was already able to search and gather information from my writing to answer various questions. Intrigued by this, I decided to test the chatbot and see if it could mimic my writing style
I wanted to explore how far we could venture into the uncanny valley with AI and learn how to create a GPT using OpenAI's tools. However, only subscribers to the $20-a-month ChatGPT Plus are currently allowed to experiment with the GPT builder. GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer. Altman acknowledged that people desire AI that is smarter, more personalized, and customizable. He envisioned a future where we could simply ask a computer for help, and it would handle all our tasks
GPTs are a specialized version of ChatGPT that can be tailored to specific purposes. They can be given unique instructions and additional data to provide more contextual answers. Not only can GPTs provide better context, but they can also interact with software. Altman showcased how a tool built by Zapier could be used to spot conflicts in your calendar and send messages on your behalf. Despite the complexity, creating a GPT does not require advanced computer science knowledge
All you need is a basic understanding of English and some free time. OpenAI's website provides examples of different GPTs, ranging from explaining board games to data analysis and mocktail recipes. To start building your own GPT, you can log in to OpenAI's website and visit the ChatGPT main page. Explore the examples provided to understand the differences from the regular ChatGPT experience. When you are ready, click on "Create a GPT" and you'll be taken to a split screen interface
On the left side, you can build your GPT, while the right side shows a live preview of your creation. Before moving to the Configure tab, start in the Create section. Here, you can provide prompts and instructions for your chatbot. I introduced myself to the AI and expressed my desire for a chatbot that could mimic my writing and potentially replace me. The AI suggested a few names for the GPT, including "Tech Scribe" and "Wired Wordsmith," but it was the third option, "Reece's Replica," that felt perfect, albeit slightly unsettling.
