After 37 years, the 37-year-old New Year's Eve tradition in Oklahoma City, known as Opening Night, will not continue with its ball drop. However, despite the cancellation of Opening Night, some groups are still hosting events to celebrate the new year. Opening Night, which took place in the courtyard in front of the Civic Center, served as a way for OKC to come together and celebrate. The decision to end Opening Night was made by the Arts Council, who stated that they won't be hosting it again on what would have been their 38th year
The original mission of Opening Night, modeled after First Night in Boston, was to bring people together in downtown Oklahoma City, and they believe they have accomplished that over the course of 37 years. Multiple factors influenced the decision to end Opening Night, including considering the competition and evaluating what else the city has to offer. The news of the event's cancellation saddened other New Year's event organizers, particularly those located nearby the Civic Center. Despite the loss of Opening Night, these organizations are still welcoming people and hosting events to celebrate the new year
The Uptown Get Down celebration at Tower Theatre, in particular, has gained popularity over the years. In conclusion, while Opening Night is no longer taking place, there are still opportunities for the people of OKC to ring in the new year with festivities.
