Large language models, such as AI chatbots, are evolving to become virtual agents capable of performing actions on your PC. Startups like Lindy and Adept are leading the way in building AI agents that can automate tasks in the workplace. Lindy aims to take care of tedious administrative chores, like scheduling meetings and sending emails. It can connect to calendar and email apps, find free time slots, and even add Zoom links or Google Maps directions
On the other hand, Adept focuses on teaching agents to perform keyboard and mouse actions by training them on user interfaces and web browsers. Adept's agent has been shown extracting data from invoices and automatically filling in forms. Microsoft and Google are also developing AI copilots that work alongside humans in the form of Office 365 tools and Workspace apps, respectively. These AI work companions are expected to make employees more productive by automating simple tasks
According to a report by Forrester, the first generation of autonomous workplace assistants (AWAs) will automate easy tasks, while the next generation will be smarter and able to undertake complex tasks. These AWAs will change how knowledge workers perform tasks and will eventually become full coworkers, making higher-level decisions and engaging in conversation. While AI will boost productivity, it is unlikely to take most jobs in the short term. Instead, it will allow workers to focus on tasks that require higher intelligence and interpersonal skills
The overall impact of AI on employment levels is uncertain, but some believe it will lead to a four-day work week and alternative work lifestyles.
