"From Smartphones to AI: The Evolution of Mobile Innovation in 2024" Dec 28, 2023

In 2024, the new cutting-edge feature in mobile innovation will be artificial intelligence, and we will all be introduced to AI Phones. Samsung is expected to reveal its Galaxy S24 line, which it is branding as an "AI Phone." Google also introduced its own "AI Phone" with the Pixel 8 launch in October. To understand why 2024 is the year of the AI Phone, we need to know what phone manufacturers mean by the term and how we got here. Artificial Intelligence is a leap forward in technology, where AI is trained to make logical connections based on extensive training. AI can identify objects like trees and dogs after being shown millions of images. AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard are trained on billions of bits of word data, allowing them to construct human-like sentences and predict the next words accurately

AI can even generate new images based on its understanding of millions of images across the internet. An AI Phone, like the ones Samsung and Qualcomm are working on, can perform similar tricks to AI assistants like ChatGPT and Bard, but usually on the device itself. AI technology has been present in smartphones for years, with chips and engines capable of neural processing and on-board machine learning. Apple introduced its game-changing iPhone X and A11 Bionic chip six years ago, which included the Neural Engine and on-board machine learning. Samsung and Qualcomm's AI Phone ambitions can be traced back to the Snapdragon 845 introduced in 2017. Google's Tensor chips brought machine learning and computational photography skills to its Pixel 6 phones in 2021. While AI in smartphones has primarily been supportive until now, with features like on-device translation and virtual assistants, 2023 marks a shift towards generative AI

Smart tech will actively aid phone users by generating content and assisting with tasks like image editing and drafting responses to emails. With similar AI capabilities across major phone manufacturers, users may not switch platforms solely for AI abilities. Core features that matter to users will still play a significant role. However, more AI experiences may be possible on-board rather than relying on cloud connectivity. The differences between Apple's AI and Samsung's AI may become more apparent, especially when comparing generative AI capabilities. Google's Pixel 8 phones and the new Tensor G3 SoC demonstrate the company's aggressive push towards on-board AI capabilities. While Google heavily relies on cloud connections for its advanced AI feats, the expectation is that it will expand on-board AI capabilities in the future

Android phones powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will also introduce powerful on-board generative AI. In 2024, "AI Phone" will be a prevalent term, but it doesn't mean that smartphones will drastically change or that the new models will be fundamentally different from current smartphones. AI Phones will offer more cool tricks and capabilities, but they will still function as phones.
