HILLSDALE, Mich. (WILX) - As flu season is in full swing and respiratory illnesses are on the rise, Hillsdale Hospital is taking measures to protect at-risk groups by restricting visitors in its birthing center. With an increase in COVID cases and hospitalizations, health officials are urging caution. Following holiday gatherings, there has already been a noticeable increase in flu-like illnesses
Randy Holland, the Director of Infection Control at the hospital, reported a 65% increase in cases compared to normal. To ensure the safety of infants, the hospital has implemented strict rules, allowing only masked and healthy parents, grandparents, and a designated support person to be admitted. Grandparents can only visit two at a time after birth. Other hospitals, including Corewell and Detroit Medical Center, have also implemented visitor restrictions
However, hospitals like Sparrow, McLaren, and Henry Ford in Mid-Michigan have not yet imposed any restrictions. Despite the expected activity level for this time of year, health officials are emphasizing the need for proactive measures to protect the community. The hospital will regularly review and adjust the restrictions based on community illness rates.
