"Lincolnshire motorists cautioned as floods threaten gardens: Four alerts issued" Dec 28, 2023

Lincolnshire motorists are being advised to steer clear of certain roads, while residents are being warned that their gardens may experience flooding after the issuance of four alerts in the county. The recent heavy rainfall has caused the levels of the River Witham in both North and South Kesteven to rise. The River Lud in Louth and the River Trent from Cromwell Weir to Gainsborough have also been affected. These alerts were posted on Wednesday, December 27 and will remain in place until Thursday afternoon

In these four areas, flooding is considered 'possible' according to Government guidance. The guidance further states that the river is expected to remain high for the next few days, increasing the likelihood of flooding in gardens, driveways, or outhouses close to the river. However, the forecasts indicate that flooding within properties is unlikely, which means that flood warnings are not expected to be issued. Motorists have also been advised to avoid low-lying land and roads near the rivers in Louth and Gainsborough. The alerts for North Kesteven, South Kesteven, and Louth will remain in place until approximately 1 pm on Thursday

The alert for Gainsborough, on the other hand, will be revised by 7 pm on Wednesday. In the event of a flood alert, affected residents are encouraged to prepare an emergency bag that includes medicines and insurance documents and to keep a close eye on any flood warnings. When a flood warning is issued, which indicates a higher level of severity than an alert, individuals should turn off their gas, water, and electricity. It is also recommended that they move their household items upstairs and ensure the safety of their pets, family members, and vehicles.
