"Strong Magnitude-5.1 Offshore Earthquake Rocks Java's Southern Coast!" Dec 28, 2023

A magnitude-5.1 offshore earthquake struck near the southern coast of Java on December 28 at approximately 5:43 a.m. The epicenter was located about 52 km (32 miles) south-southwest of Singaparna. The quake occurred at a depth of roughly 72 km (45 miles) and minor shaking may have been felt in certain parts of Java. So far, there have been no reports of any damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake. Therefore, it seems unlikely that there will be significant damage

It may take several hours before authorities are able to assess the extent of any damage, particularly in more remote areas. Aftershocks are also expected to occur in the days following the initial earthquake. Despite the earthquake, there are no tsunami advisories in effect. However, officials may decide to temporarily close transportation infrastructure in the affected area in order to inspect it for potential damage. While this could cause some minor disruptions, service is expected to resume quickly if no damage is detected. Additionally, there is a possibility of utility outages in areas where the shaking was felt

These outages could occur as a result of the earthquake.
