SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) — As the holiday weekend comes to a close for thousands of San Diegans, the lasting presence of COVID-19 remains a concern. Dr. Kaveh Bahmanpour from Sharp Community Medical Group acknowledges that this is a recurring worry during the holiday season
County data indicates that there was already a surge in cases leading up to mid-December, and medical professionals anticipate that this upward trend will persist. In fact, the actual numbers could be even higher due to the fact that many people are testing at home and not reporting their results. Dr. Bahmanpour points out that this surge in cases is not solely caused by holiday gatherings, but is also influenced by the spread of two new contagious variants: JN.1 and HV.1, which currently account for over 60% of infections
This continuous evolution of the virus poses a challenge as new spike proteins emerge, requiring the development of new vaccines and care plans to combat more potent strains. For the majority of individuals infected with these variants, the symptoms will resemble those of a severe cold or flu. However, Dr. Bahmanpour emphasizes the availability of new rounds of vaccine boosters since September and strongly encourages eligible individuals to get vaccinated
This recommendation applies particularly to those who are immunocompromised, have underlying health conditions, or are above the age of 65. Failing to do so could result in hospitalizations and the progression of the infection beyond a simple upper respiratory illness. Even if individuals do not fall into these high-risk categories, Dr. Bahmanpour advises taking extra precautions when visiting loved ones who do. This is done not only for personal safety but also to protect the vulnerable population
In his words, "If it's not for yourself, then for them."
