"Flu and COVID-19 cases surge in Elmira, NY; Health Officials advise caution" Dec 28, 2023

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Local health officials in Elmira are urging residents to take precautions as cases of the flu and COVID-19 continue to rise. Dr. Justin Nistico, an Infectious Disease Physician at Arnot Health, emphasized the importance of handwashing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals

He also encouraged people to consider getting vaccinated, highlighting that vaccines are now available for RSV, Flu, and COVID-19. Dr. Andrew Klee, an Infection Prevention Associate at Arnot Health, recommended wearing a mask if feeling unwell or if interacting with individuals with underlying health conditions such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes. Additionally, he advised individuals with access to a COVID test kit to use it as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the virus

Both doctors emphasized the higher risk faced by unvaccinated individuals and acknowledged vaccine hesitancy as a potential factor. Dr. Nistico cited "vaccine fatigue" as a possible reason for hesitancy, while Dr. Klee noted some individuals may feel their personal health is not at risk from these infections, leading them to believe they don't need the vaccine. Those interested in getting vaccinated are encouraged to visit their local pharmacist or consult with their doctor

By taking these measures, Elmira residents can help protect themselves and their community from the flu and COVID-19.
