"Melatonin: A Holiday Travel Remedy for Sleep-Deprived Kids" Dec 28, 2023

Parents may be tempted to use melatonin to help their children sleep, but D.C.-area doctors warn that it may not be a good idea. According to a pediatric physician at Kaiser Permanente in Maryland, Dr. Christina Brown, screen time could be a major factor in the increasing use of melatonin among young children and teens. A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics revealed that up to 20% of teens in the U.S

use melatonin to aid their sleep, while 5% of preschool-age children also use the product. Dr. Brown explained that melatonin is the hormone that regulates our sleep, and the blue light from screens can suppress its production. She cautioned against using melatonin as a sleep aid, especially for children, as it is not regulated by the FDA and has variable concentrations in over-the-counter supplements

Dr. Brown also warned about the risk of overdose, particularly in younger children who may be attracted to the colorful packaging and flavors of melatonin products. Even during the holiday season, when families are traveling, Dr. Brown advised against increasing melatonin use and recommended sticking to a familiar sleep routine

She emphasized the importance of creating a sleep-friendly environment and avoiding caffeine, including in desserts like chocolate. Dr. Brown also noted that persistent sleep issues may be a symptom of an underlying condition, such as anxiety, depression, or sleep apnea, and advised seeking further medical advice in such cases.
